Why is My Refrigerator Not Cooling?

When a refrigerator isn’t cold anymore, it’s time to figure out what the issue is. A lot of times it’s something as simple as a routine coil cleaning behind the refrigerator. But, with latest models of refrigerators, they are equipped with a variety of sensors too.

Before we look too deep, we look at the most typical and simple reasons for this issue. Here are a few of issues that we have determined lead to a refrigerator not cooling:

Is it plugged in? This may seem like it is a silly question, but we have been called out to jobs that this was the issue. For some reason, the refrigerator was unplugged. it’s possible a child or pet did it, or an electrician during a project. Whatever the case may be, make sure it is plugged in.

Look at the thermostat inside. This is a common issue for those with children in the home. After all, kids love dials and buttons and so, without understanding they are doing something wrong, they mess with them. So, check that the thermostat setting is not the cause of the warm refrigerator.

Refrigerator Components to Troubleshoot?

Be sure the vents inside the freezer are not blocked with food or boxes. This is common since bags of frozen vegetables get stuck in the back. There can be food in the way back of a freezer that has been forgotten.

Check that the condenser cooling fan is clear and clean of debris. To be sure, unplug the fridge and slide it away from the kitchen wall. The fan for a lot of models is just at the bottom or in the back part of the freezer unit. Often times, customers don’t think about cleaning this area of the fridge. But, it is very important to clean it. And, it clogs up with fuzz and dust quickly, especially in houses that have cats and dogs. So, find a clean rag and get the collected dust out of the refrigerator coils and fan.

This is not suggested for refrigerators that have the rear coil system. Once all clean, plug it into the wall and monitor if the fan spins.

The Freezer Unit is Cold but the Fridge is Not

There are many reasons for a refrigerator that won’t cool after these obvious ones to take a look at if the freezer is cold but your fridge is not. The evaporator coils are frosted over. This happens if there’s a malfunction in the defrost heating system. Or if the automatic defrost has an issue. The evaporator fan motor is another cause.

Every fridge has a set of evaporator coils. These evaporator coils are what gets cold and then the fan circulates the cool air throughout the unit. The damper control assembly working correctly. The temperature control board transports the electricity to the compressor and fan, this is not likely the problem but it’s worth mentioning.

And, the thermistor could be defective, which is a tiny sensor inside the appliance that displays the temperature. Having one of our technicians look at it is the best option but these are a few of of the most typical problems.
